What is AdBlue and what is it used for?
AdBlue is a solution made of demineralized water and urea. It is not fuel nor a diesel additive. It is used in diesel vehicles equipped with an SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction) to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx).
Thanks to the SCR system, harmful emissions are converted into nitrogen and water vapor, thus meeting current environmental regulations.
When should AdBlue be refilled?
AdBlue consumption depends on the vehicle model and driving conditions. As a general guideline:
• Between 1 and 2 liters are consumed every 1,000 km
• A full tank can last between 5,000 and 15,000 km
The vehicle provides advance warning when the level is low and indicates the remaining distance before the tank is empty. It is advisable to refill AdBlue before reaching the critical level.
What happens if AdBlue runs out?
If you ignore the warning and the tank becomes completely empty, the vehicle will not restart once you switch off the engine. This is not a serious mechanical failure, but the system is programmed to prevent starting in order to comply with emissions regulations.
