At Alas Estaciones, we explain what AdBlue is and how it works in modern diesel vehicles. It is essential for complying with Euro 6 emissions regulations. If you drive a recent diesel vehicle, you have probably seen the warning on the instrument cluster. But what exactly is AdBlue and what happens if it runs out?

Understanding how it works will help you avoid unnecessary immobilizations and unexpected costs.

What is AdBlue and what is it used for?

AdBlue is a solution made of demineralized water and urea. It is not fuel nor a diesel additive. It is used in diesel vehicles equipped with an SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction) to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Thanks to the SCR system, harmful emissions are converted into nitrogen and water vapor, thus meeting current environmental regulations.

When should AdBlue be refilled?

AdBlue consumption depends on the vehicle model and driving conditions. As a general guideline:

• Between 1 and 2 liters are consumed every 1,000 km
• A full tank can last between 5,000 and 15,000 km

The vehicle provides advance warning when the level is low and indicates the remaining distance before the tank is empty. It is advisable to refill AdBlue before reaching the critical level.

What happens if AdBlue runs out?

If you ignore the warning and the tank becomes completely empty, the vehicle will not restart once you switch off the engine. This is not a serious mechanical failure, but the system is programmed to prevent starting in order to comply with emissions regulations.

Driving for extended periods with faults in the SCR system can cause catalytic converter issues and lead to costly repairs.

Tips to avoid problems

• Do not ignore dashboard warnings
• Refill before the tank is empty
• Use high-quality AdBlue
• Avoid spills on the bodywork

AdBlue is part of the regular maintenance of a modern diesel vehicle, just like oil or coolant. Checking it periodically will help keep the engine in good condition and prevent unexpected issues on the road.

Responsible management of both fuel and AdBlue ensures greater efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and peace of mind on every journey.
