Windscreen wipers play a vital role in maintaining visibility during rain, yet many drivers only notice them when they stop working properly. Checking them before autumn arrives can prevent visibility problems when you need them most.

Here are five common signs that your wiper blades may need replacing.

1. They leave streaks

If lines, wet areas or sections of uncleared glass remain after each pass, the rubber blade may be worn, dirty or deformed.

2. They make unusual noises

Squeaking, juddering or skipping across the windscreen can indicate that the rubber is no longer moving smoothly over the glass.

3. They clean unevenly

A wiper blade in good condition should maintain even contact with the windscreen. Areas that remain consistently wet are a sign worth investigating.

4. The rubber is cracked or damaged

Sunlight, heat and temperature changes gradually deteriorate rubber. A simple visual inspection can reveal cracks, splits, deformation or hardened material.

5. You cannot remember the last inspection

There is no need to wait until visibility becomes poor. Spain’s DGT recommends inspecting wiper blades regularly and paying particular attention to their condition ahead of autumn.

Remember to check your windscreen washer fluid and make sure the washer jets distribute liquid correctly.

A clean windscreen and effective wipers are particularly important in heavy rain, when visibility may already be significantly reduced.
